About The Competition

The 2021 NorCalCyber Mayors Cup is open to any student in middle school, high school, and community college in Norther California. Even if this event is your first experience with cybersecurity, you will learn cutting edge cybersecurity content from experts across California! Because of the challenges relating to distance learning, many students were unable to participate in the annual CyberPatriot competition. The NorCalCyber Mayors Cup is a chance for students to reengage with cybersecurity education; using the same platform as National Cyber League, the Mayors Cup experience is designed for equity of access, allowing students to participate with Chromebook-type devices. This is critical to ensure that ALL students and communities have the opportunity to learn, play, and compete.

The NorCalCyber Mayors Cup is a month-long experience that culminates with a competition on April 17, 2021. The experience begins when Cyber Skyline's (makers of National Cyber League) practice gymnasium (gym) opens at the Kick-Off Event on March 17th.

In this capture the flag (CTF) competition, students will work together in teams to solve a variety of real-world cybersecurity challenges that will have them decipher encrypted messages, track down hackers, identify data breaches, and more.

You can practice and learn in the gym whether you are a beginner or more experienced player. Competitors only need a Chromebook to compete. For more resources, check out the National Cyber League resource page.

Participants are ranked first by who has the most points. In the event of a tie, they are secondarily ranked by who has the highest accuracy. If there is a tie on points, they are thirdly ranked by who took the least amount of time to submit their final answer.

At the end of the competitions, students will be provided a scorecard showing their personal knowledge and performance.
