About The Competition
The 5th annual 2023 NorCalCyber Mayors Cyber Cup is open to any student in middle school, high school, and community college in Northern California. For some participants, this will be their first experience with cybersecurity. They will learn cutting-edge cybersecurity content from experts across California. The NorCalCyber Mayors Cup is a chance for students to engage and potentially re-engage with cybersecurity education; using the Cyber Skyline platform; which is also used by the National Cyber League. The Mayors Cup experience was designed for equity of access, allowing students to participate with Chromebook-type devices.
The NorCalCyber Mayors Cup is a month-long experience that culminates with a competition on Saturday, April 22, 2023. The experience begins when Cyber Skyline's practice gymnasium (gym) opens at the Kick-Off Event on March 2nd.
In this capture the flag (CTF) competition, students will work together in teams to solve a variety of real-world cybersecurity challenges that will have them decipher encrypted messages, track down hackers, identify data breaches, and more.
Team members can practice and learn in the gym whether they are a beginner or more experienced players. Competitors only need a Chromebook to compete. See the videos on this site to learn about the tools and capabilities.
Participants are ranked first by the teams having the most points. In the event of a tie, they are secondarily ranked by the highest accuracy. If there is a tie on points, they are then ranked by the speed at which they took to submit their final answer.
At the end of the competitions, students will be provided a scorecard showing their personal knowledge and performance. This information may be used on the student's resume or LinkedIn profile.
